Montessori Curriculum

At Morey Public School Academy, teachers are working with the guidelines of the Michigan state grade level expectations, which can be found here, as well as incorporating Montessori curriculum guidelines.

This year we are implementing Montessori math, language arts, political geography (parts of the world), and geometry. Science and social studies are being taught as before, according to the state curriculum.

Kindergarten

Practical Life - Develops:
    •    coordination

Sensorial - Develops:
    •    sense of order
    •    differentiate each of the five senses
    •    improve each of the five senses
    •    prepare for language and math

Math - Develops:
    •    number concepts
    •    operations

Language Arts - Develops:
    •    letter sounds
    •    reading
    •    handwriting
    •    grammar
    •    vocabulary

1st Through 5th Year Students

Language  

Students will be able to express themselves in written and spoken language, and understand the written and spoken words of others. They will do this by developing:
    •    the ability to express awareness of themselves, others and their environment through written and spoken words
    •    the ability to recognize and enjoy written and spoken language
    •    an enriched vocabulary
    •    skills in reading and comprehension across academic disciplines
    •    an understanding and appreciation for the structure of language
    •    the ability to identify and express concepts in language
    •    verbal and non-verbal interpersonal communication skills
    •    the ability to use necessary language for problem solving

Mathematics

Elementary Montessori materials allow students to develop an in-depth understanding of math concepts followed by memorization of math facts. Students receive individual and small group lessons and work at their own pace. Math curriculum is organized so that students can independently follow the math sequence under the teacher’s guidance.

Geometry

Comprehensive geometry studies begin with line and its parts and continue on to studies of angles, polygons, triangles, quadrilaterals, circles area and volume. The concepts of similarity, congruency and equivalency are also studied.

Geography

Geography studies cover concepts of the Earth.  Areas of study include:
    •    Major land and water forms around the world: oceans, seas, lakes, rivers, volcanoes, mountains and islands
    •    Political geography – continents, oceans, countries

    Ashton (1-3 Year)

    Ashton is always excited about school.  When others sometimes groan, I can count on Ashton to smilingly be delighted to do the next task or project.  She does not lose heart and is always positive.  I enjoy having the chance to work with her!
